[Mini-interview] New Delhi / Anchit Mittal
“Reminiscing An Year At Hyundai Corporation”
“There is a tide in the affairs of men, which taken at flood leads onto fortune. Omitted,
all the voyage of their life is bound in shallows and in miseries.”
– William Shakespeare –
This quote literally means that there is an opportunity, an occasion in each man’s life when he can commit himself to a course of action that will lead to his success; but if he fails to take the opportunity when it presents itself, for the rest of his life he will be a mediocrity.
A once in a lifetime opportunity presented itself an year ago when I completed MBA (International Business and Marketing) from New Delhi Institute of Management, in the form of an opening at Hyundai Corporation NDL OFC. Freshly out of B-School, with lots of experience to be gained and dreams to be fulfilled, I took my chances and applied. I was selected and thus began my career in the steel trading industry.
The beginning was not tough for me. There are two particular reasons for that, first one being that I was full of excitement with a willingness to learn and do well at my first job ever; and secondly the conducive environment that was provided to me by my seniors, helped me adjust comfortably.
As of now I am handling some Non-Ferrous Metal business and WireRod business in India. Besides that, doing market research on a regular basis and reporting to higher management for key business decision making including processing and documentation of imports in to India.
Due to a lot of antidumping measures applied by the Govt. of India on steel imports from S. Korea, we are facing some really challenging times and it is important for us to look for alternate opportunities in order to achieve our targets and stay relevant in the Indian Market given the fierce competition in the steel trading industry here in India.
The non-ferrous business that I am handling caters to the automotive industry for making wire harness for battery terminals. There is always pressure from the client, automotive sector being very dynamic in nature. I have handled such a demanding client and addressing difficult price negotiations, issues related to production, quality, logistics, delivery, payment. All in a single business has given me a good taste of what it’s like to work in a fast paced corporate environment. All of this would not be possible to handle without the help and support of my colleagues at the HQ to whom I am very grateful.
I attended the Steel Division’s Global Training Program in Oct, 2017. It gave me an opportunity to meet my colleagues in person at the HQ. It proved to be a good rapport building exercise which manifested in the form of effective business communication on a daily basis. I had the opportunity to visit POSCO Pohang, Hyundai Steel Ulsan and Dangjin Works. The kind of exposure received in the form of Industrial Visits to the state of the art manufacturing facilities gave a clearer understanding of the products that we are selling in the market. Coming from a technical educational background (Engineering, Computer Science), I was not only excited but also made the best of this opportunity.
Above all, during this visit I got to closely understand the Korean Way of Life which is a testimony to the fact that, a nation’s culture resides in the heart and in the soul of its people.
I firmly believe in the idea that a man becomes the company he keeps. Well, it fits in an organizational structure too. During the last one year, the reason behind my progress in understanding of the business and its intricacies is attributed to the fact that I enjoy the camaraderie of veterans of the industry such as Mr. B.V John, Mr. C. Dangi, Mr. Madhupal and Mr. S.H Seo. My seniors are very approachable and I get to benefit from their vast experience in the form of guidance when a situation arises in business.
I would like to convey my sincere and profound gratitude to all the members of the Hyundai Corporation family. I wish all the branches a successful 3rd and 4th Quarter 2018.
